Until recently, the most a dog visiting a London-area pub could expect was a refreshing bowl of…water. But last month the gastropub chain Brakspear teamed up with Butcher’s Pet Care, and two of its pubs now offer a lip-smacking variety of lunches for dogs.
“A family walk is a great way to strengthen that special emotional connection with your dog, and stopping off at a country pub to enjoy a drink and bite to eat is a great British summer institution,” Caroline Coombs, brand manager at Butcher’s Pet Care, said in a press release.
The new menu’s “Meaty Feasts” and “Special Fayre” offerings include liver and garden vegetable chunks in gravy, and chicken and beef chunks in jelly.
Pooches can currently dine on the pub grub at the Five Alls near Lechlade, Gloucestershire, and the Catherine Wheel in Goring-on-Thames, Berkshire. Additional pubs may be added soon if the menus are successful. According to a Brakspear, both locations are popular with pet parents “who take advantage of the pubs’ dog-friendly policy after enjoying a walk in the countryside.”
Kennel Club Secretary Caroline Kisko told the Telegraph, “It is well known that dogs improve the atmosphere of a place so it makes sense that businesses go that extra mile to make dogs and their owners feel welcome in their premises.”
Tom Davies, Brakspear’s commercial director, agrees. “For many dog owners, being able to source a meal in the pub for their pet as well as for themselves will be an attractive option and we’re pleased to be offering the Butcher’s meals, which we hope will be a further boost to the dog-friendly reputation of our pubs,” he said.
