Here are some tips from Animal Communicator Faye Pietrokowsky on how to make things easier on both you and your pooch when you can’t take him along when you travel.
When you must travel without your dog, the first thing to remember is that it is very difficult to fool your furry friends. Because they are so dependent upon us for their survival and well-being, they often know us better than we know them! They study us; they read our minds. Most of the time, they pay closer attention to us than we do to them.
The following are some things you can do to make your travels less stressful and worrisome, for both you and your dog. These may help you and your dog be more at peace when you have to travel without him.
Tell your dog that you are going away before your bring your suitcases out to pack.
If you often take your dog places with you, explain to your furry friend why he or she is not traveling with you this time.
Tell your dog when you will be returning.
Every day you are away from your dog, send him a warm and loving thought. I call these “mental emails,” and I encourage people to send them to their beloved friends as often as possible when they are away.
Most dogs that cannot travel with their pet parents prefer to stay in their own home with someone they know. The next best thing is to have your dog stay at a home he has been to before, or to stay with someone he knows well.
If you rescued your dog from a shelter, leaving him in a kennel where he is locked up may trigger unpleasant memories. If you can’t have a dogsitter come to your house or leave your dog with someone you know, look for a kennel that doesn’t have cages or anything resembling bars.
Promise to take your dog for a car ride, an extra-long walk or to bring him a special treat upon your return, and keep your promise.
Above all else, know that your dog knows that you will return.
